Kalea Koala

This little cutie was inspired by the traumatic fires going on in Australia during 2019 and 2020. I love koalas anyway, but to support the efforts going on there this sweet koala was born!

Materials-

© I used Hygge Red Heart yarn size 5

o Grey and Pearl

o And black worsted weight yarn for the nose.

o You can use worsted weight for the whole koala, you will use a 3.5mm hook and 2.5mm for the nose.

© Hook size 3.5mm (E) and 4.5mm (7)

© 18mm Safety Eyes, or embroidered (if using size 4 yarn use 15mm)

o In front loops only pick up the next two loops, yarn over and pull through twice.

© Magic Ring Alternative- chain 2 and single crochet in the second chain from the hook.

Rd 4: sc 2, inc (24)

Rd 5: sc 3, inc (30)

Rd 6: sc 4, inc (36)

Rd 7-11: sc around (36) (5 rounds)

Rd 12: sc 4, dec (30)

Rd 13: sc around (30)

Rd 14: sc 3, dec (24)

Rd 15: sc around (24)

Rd 16: sc 2, dec (18)

Rd 17: sc around (18)

Rd 18: sc, dec (12)

Rd 19: sc around (12)


Head-

Rd 20: sc, inc (18)

Rd 31: sc 4, dec (30) insert eyes between rds 28 and 29 about 8 sts apart

FO and close the hole looping through FLO.


Nose-

Black with 3.5mm hook. (If you are using a smaller yarn use 2.5mm hook)

Rd 1: sc 6 in MR

Rd 2: inc (12)

Rd 3: inc x3, sc 3, inc x3, sc 3 (18)

Rd 4: sc around (18)

FO leaving a tail for sewing.

Sew between the eyes starting at the top between rds 28 and 29 and the bottom between rds 23 and 24.


Ears (make 2)-

Outer piece-

Grey switch back to 4.5mm hook from here on out

Rd 1: sc 6 in MR

Rd 2: inc (12)

Rd 3: sc, inc (18)

Rd 4: sc 2, inc (24)

Rd 5-6: sc around (24)

FO leaving a tail for sewing.

Inner piece-

White

Rd 1: sc 6 in MR

Rd 2: inc (12)

Rd 3: sc, inc (18)

Rd 4: (this is not a complete rd) sc, inc, sc 2, inc, sc

FO and leave a tail for sewing

Sew the wrong sides together with the smaller white piece onto the bigger grey piece.

Sew the ear to the head with the grey tail on either side of the head with the top below the 4th rd from the top and the bottom in line with the middle of the eye.


Belly Patch-

Rd 2: inc (12)

Rd 3: inc x3, sc 3, inc x3, sc 3 (18)

Rd 4: (sc, inc) x3, sc 3, (sc, inc) x3, sc 3 (24)

Rd 5: sc, inc, (sc 2, inc) x2, sc 5, inc, (sc 2, inc) x2, sc 4 (30)

FO and leave a tail for sewing

Sew to the front of the belly the top between rds 15 and 16 and bottom between 7 and 8.


Arms (make 2)-

Rd 1: sc 6 in MR

Rd 2: inc (12)

Rd 3: sc, inc (18)

Rd 4-6: sc around (18) (3 rounds)

Rd 7: sc, dec (12)

Rd 8: sc 2, dec (9)

Rd 9-14: sc around (9) (6 rounds)

Rd 15: pinch ends closed and 5 sc across through both layers

FO and leave a tail for sewing

Attach arms between rds 16 and 17 on either side of the body.

Legs (make 2)-

Rd 1: sc 6 in MR

Rd 2: inc (12)

Rd 3: sc, inc (18)

Rd 4: (sc 3, inc)x 4, sc 2 (22)

Rd 5-8: sc around (22) (4 rounds)

Rd 9: (sc 3, dec)x 4, sc 2 (18)

Rd 10: sc, dec (12)

Rd 11-19: sc around (12) (9 rounds)

Rd 20: pinch ends closed and 6 sc across through both layers

FO leaving a tail for sewing.

Sew to the bottom of the body with the legs meeting in the middle at the MR.


Now you have finished your sweet Koala! I’ve put a lot of thought into what the name could be. Some names I’ve come up with are Kai for males and Kalea for females. You are welcome to pick your own names, but I love these for this little guy!
